When you see "oud" in a perfume at Rs 2,000, you are almost certainly smelling a synthetic oud accord — a lab-made approximation of the oud character. That is not necessarily a problem: good synthetic oud accords can smell excellent and last well. But knowing the difference helps you understand what you are buying and why prices vary so dramatically.

Types of oud you will find in Pakistan

Pure oud oil (attar)

This is the real thing — distilled directly from agarwood resin, usually from India, Bangladesh, or Southeast Asia. It is applied in tiny amounts directly to skin, not sprayed. "Arabic oud" branding does not mean it contains real Arabic oud. This is purely marketing language. Genuine Arabic oud (from the Gulf, India, or Southeast Asia) is extremely expensive. Most perfumes using this language contain synthetic oud accords inspired by Arabic oud traditions, not actual imported oud oil. That is fine as long as you understand what you are getting.

Daraz oud listings are the highest-risk category in Pakistan's perfume market. The platform has no effective mechanism for preventing mislabeled, diluted, or counterfeit fragrance products. A listing claiming to be a particular brand's oud at a dramatically reduced price is almost certainly not genuine. Fake perfumes may have spelling mistakes, poor packaging, weak spray quality, harsh alcohol smell, very low price, or unclear seller details. Buying directly from a brand's own website is the only way to be certain of what you are getting.

"24 hours longevity" claims need context. Longevity depends on formulation concentration, your skin type, body heat, and how the fragrance is applied. A cheap EDT claiming 24-hour longevity is misleading. An extrait de parfum at 25% oil concentration genuinely can achieve this on most skin types when applied correctly — concentration is the key variable, not the marketing copy.

How to wear oud properly — the things most people get wrong

• Apply to pulse points, not clothing. Oud fragrance develops through skin heat. On fabric it simply sits statically. Neck, inner wrists, inside elbows. These are where oud projects and develops correctly.
• 2 sprays maximum for indoor wear. Oud projects powerfully. Two sprays on pulse points is a complete application for most indoor settings. Three sprays for outdoor or evening events. More than three sprays of a good oud extrait is aggressive in enclosed spaces.
• Give it 20 minutes before judging. Oud top notes can be sharp, woody, or even slightly harsh in the first 10–15 minutes as the alcohol dissipates. The real character of the fragrance emerges in the heart and base — around 20–30 minutes after application. Never judge an oud fragrance in the first five minutes.

Apply unscented lotion or a thin layer of Vaseline on pulse points before spraying and you will notice a meaningful difference in how long the oud character persists.

Oud in Pakistan's four seasons — which blend works when
